How To Stop Spam On Your Website And Keep It More Secure

Bots, they’re a fact of internet life. They have been built to do automated tasks. Some bots—the good ones—is good for SEO. They crawl and index your website so it can rank.

What are spambots?

Some aren’t as good though. These bad bots or spambots have malicious intent. They aren’t regulated like the good bots. They try to gain access to your website, send emails, publish comments, steal your content, and sign-up as fake users.

Spambots can ruin your analytics referral, overload your inbox and stress your web server by clogging it up. Although most of them do nothing else but annoy you, some post as a security threat.

But whether they’re harmless or can cause serious damage, spambots can make your website look suspicious to users, increase bounce rates and impact its load speed.

How Do I Stop Spam From Getting Through My Website?

Because of these, it is necessary to block spam from getting through your website. But how do you do that? We recommend you do the following:

  • Use Honeypot.

Honeypot is a spambot trap. It mimics a real computer system—with data, applications and all—making it look like a legitimate target for spambots. Honeypot can detect and deflect spambot attacks.

The good thing is, it doesn’t have any noticeable difference on the frontend, so it can do its job without affecting what users are doing.

  • Add a Recaptcha.

If Honeypot is not powerful enough, the next step is to add a reCAPTCHA. It’s a system that helps establish that a user is human, not a robot.

It is a bit more intrusive for users especially when they are filling out a form, but it does offer a better level of protection against spambots.
